The sources AI engines lean on — and the ones worth targeting

What the page classifies

Every time an AI engine cites a URL in a scan response, PivotSEO keeps it. This page takes all of those citations, groups them by root domain, then sorts each domain by authority type: Wikipedia, B2B review sites (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot…), forums and communities (Reddit, Quora, Stack Overflow…), tech media, business media, video, marketplaces, social, documentation, code. The question it answers is not « where am I cited » but « what do the models rely on when they talk about my industry ».

The three counters at the top

  • Total citations: how many URLs were cited, across every scan and every engine.
  • Unique domains: how many distinct sites feed those answers. A low number signals an industry locked up by a handful of sources.
  • Prompts with citations: how many of your prompts the engines answered with a source attached.

Top 5 PR actions to take (by ROI)

  • The ROI score combines the authority of the source type with the number of citations: a heavily cited source of a high-authority type outranks one with a couple more citations but no weight.
  • Your own brand and your competitors are excluded: this ranking lists only reachable targets, places where you can actually earn a presence.
  • Every row carries an action written for its type: check or create the Wikipedia page, claim and flesh out a review listing, get active in a community, aim for press coverage, produce video.
  • The ranking of types reflects what models cite most readily: Wikipedia ahead of review sites, then forums, then media.

Your pages, your competitors, and the detail

  • Your pages already cited (to optimize) isolates the domains that are yours, with the exact URLs the engines pick up. These are your highest-yield pages: strengthen them before writing new ones.
  • In All sources, the You and Competitor tags separate at a glance what is under your control, what belongs to a rival, and what is up for grabs.
  • Clicking a row unfolds the suggested action, the engines that cite that domain, and the exact pages cited, with how many times each was picked up.
  • Breakdown by source type gives each category's share of the total: in one line, a picture of how your industry is documented.

The page stays empty?

It only reads citations already collected by your scans: no external call is made here. If your scans produce no sources, there is nothing to classify. The usual culprit: an engine answering from memory cites nothing. In Settings → AI engines, the web search option for ChatGPT changes everything on this point — switched on, the engine searches the web before answering, and the URLs it cites end up enriching this page.

Tip :The real output of this page is a PR shortlist. Take the top three rows of the Top 5: those are your next three outreach moves — not three more blog posts.
